Tentative Detailed Schedule

Week One

Monday, April 10: Intro to class. Background on C.S. Lewis. Begin reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (LWW) together. Begin viewing LWW if technology will cooperate. Assignment: Continue reading LWW. Open a blog, post a self-introduction blog comment (this one does not count toward the ten required), and send me your blog address dale.sullivan@ndsu.edu. Explore the website "Into the Wardrobe" linked on the class website in left margin.

Tuesday, April 11: Review of outside reading. Continue reading LWW together. Continue viewing LWW. Discussion. Assignment: Continue reading LWW. Read "Lewis on Fairy Tales" and "L'Engle's Foreword to Companion to Narnia," both linked on class website in supplemental readings. Post a blog (the first post).

Wednesday, April 12: Review outside reading. Finish reading and viewing LWW. Introduce next books and break into reading groups. Assignment: begin read Voyage of the Dawn Treader (VDT) or The Silver Chair (SC), depending on your reading group. Read "Lewis Experiment in Criticism Epilogue" linked in class website supplemental readings. Post a blog (the second post).

Thursday, April 13: Review outside reading. Break into reading groups and begin reading VDT or SC together. Reconvene as large group and report. Begin viewing VDT and SC. Assignment: continue reading VDT or SC, read "Tolson, God's Story Teller" linked in supplemental readings, and post a blog (the third post).

Week Two

Monday, April 17: Review outside reading. Reading groups. Large group. Viewing. Assignment: finish reading VDT or SC, read "Sullivan, Narnia as Epideictic" linked in supplemental readings, and post a blog (the fourth).

Tuesday, April 18: Review outside reading. View Shadowlands. Assignment: Begin reading A Wrinkle in Time (WT), explore L'Engle Homepage (linked in left navigation bar of class website), and post blog (the fifth).

Wednesday, April 19: Review outside reading. Read WT together. Begin viewing WT. Assignment: continue reading WT, read "Zarin, Books of L'Engle" linked in supplemental readings, and post a blog (the sixth).

Thursday, April 20: Review outside reading. Read WT together. Continue viewing WT. Assignment: continue reading WT, read "Hein, L'Engle and Myth Today" linked in supplemental readings, and post a blog (the seventh). Bring a 200-250 description of the paper you are proposing to write for this class. You will either read those in class on Monday, or I will pick them up.

Week Three

Monday, April 24: Read a couple paper proposals and pick up the rest. Review outside reading. Finish reading WT togehter, and finish view it. Assign: Begin reading A Wind in the Door (WD) or A Swiftly Tilting Planet (STP) depending on your reading group and read "Needham, L'Engle and Writer's Wisdom" linked in supplemental readings. Post a blog (the eighth). Bring in an outline of the paper for next time.

Tuesday, April 25: Discuss paper outlines. Review outside reading. Reading groups. Large group. Assign: Continue reading A Wind in the Door (WD) or A Swiftly Tilting Planet (STP) and post a blog (the ninth). Write the thesis and subpoints of your argument out in full sentences, and bring them.

Wednesday, April 26: Discuss thesis and subpoints. Review outside reading. Reading groups. Large group. Assign: continue reading A Wind in the Door (WD) or A Swiftly Tilting Planet (STP) depending on your reading group. Post a blog (the tenth and last). Bring a list of quotations you anticipate using in the paper.

Thursday, April 27: Review quotations and assign peer reviewers. Review outside reading. Class is short today, so reading groups will meet after class dismisses. Assign: If we haven't finished reading, finish reading. Write the first full draft of your paper and share it with your peer reviewer. Write a one-page response to your peer's paper. No class on Monday.

Week Four

Monday, May 1: no class. Assignment: After meeting with your peer reviewer, discussing papers, and exchanging written reviews, be sure to take her/his review of your paper so that you can hand it in with the paper. Rewrite your paper and bring it to class on Tuesday.

Tuesday, May 2: Reading papers aloud in class. Assignment: Write the final draft of the paper and bring it to class on Wednesday (due then).

Wednesday, May 3: More reading of papers aloud. Discussion of class as a whole. Student review of class. Goodbyes.
